Close approach of 2022 MP

The NEO 2022 MP is predicted to make a close approach on June 27 at 03:32 UT. ST4v predicts that this MP will reach peak brightness of 16.7 magnitude on June 27 at 0000 EDT when it will be in Libra moving at 24.6"/min. This object will require a large telescope or imaging system to capture it. It's too faint for my 13" scope.

Here's an Interactive Atlas chart showing the predicted path for 2022 MP from June 25-27: [attachment=2407]

This object will be visible from the southern hemisphere, weather permitting.

Just like 2022 MQ, CNEOS has given this pass a 'Rarity' of 1. Two in a row.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the heads up, I managed to grab a few frames of 2022 MP, a smattering of photons just above the background level which I should be able to tease out.

I'm just collecting some data on the other object, 2022 MQ you also posted about, so much brighter but whizzing along. Smile

Please don't give me any more homework - I need my beauty sleep. Tongue

Hi Dennis,

I'm glad that you were able to capture these 2 MPs as they flew past. 

Sorry about the beauty sleep. I thought that you were complaining about the weather  Wink. Haven't you slept enough? At least flats & darks can be done at a more convenient time. Did you use the EOS R5 again?

Gee, you guys are tough folks to please. Smile 

Clouds chased me in so I got to do my Flats and Darks as I was packing up.

Brisbane skies are usually quite clear during our Winter months, but this year has seen a lot more cloud cover and rain than normal due to an unusually protracted La Nina weather pattern.

Here we have Part 2 of my homework assignment. Smile

Although I could just make out the 30 sec trail on most of the frames I took, when I Calibrated, Aligned and Combined them in PixInsight, the processing “deleted” the few fragile photons. I tried Combining at MAX with no Pixel rejection, but even that method did not tease out the trail. Confused

Here is a single 30 sec Frame, with the mount “locked on” to the RA and DEC rates of 2022 MP, so it appears as the dot in the centre with the stars as trails.

Nice work.

2022 MN1 will buzz Earth in a couple of days inside the Moons orbit but at closest (6/28/22 09:29TDB) and fastest (329"/min) only mag 18.5. A few hours earlier (00:20TDB) just outside the lunar orbit, mag 17.3. Never really a southern object.

So yes, it's safe to go out and play.....

Dennis, you get an A for effort here, for sure. The fast movers are hard to catch because they don't stay still. You caught this one though.

I didn't mention 2022 MN1 because it wasn't going to get very bright & was moving VERY fast at minimum distance of 0.00239 AU. The H=27.2 ment it was faint as BMD noted.

Get some sleep, you earned it  Wink.
