Logging "unseen" objects - Ullomat - 2019-05-27

Hi all,

I am using ST 3 for quite a while now. I had a bad night yesterday when I only saw two from eight objects. A lot of clouds and some objects too faint...
This leads to a problem for which I do not have a good solution. I currently log such negative observations by writing e.g. "not seen" in the log description.
ST marks this object with a LOG sign afterwards as usual. But I have no flag to see that it is still a not observed object or that I have to reobserve it with more aperture or under better skies.

How do you solve this?

Uli

Hello,

Use the observation status icon in your observing list. You can enable this column via the column configuration. You can set each object to be unobserved, observed, or to re-observe. The list can be filtered via a right-click on the column heading depending on the individual status.

Just keep in mind that this status is part of the observing list, so it will not show up elsewhere or on other lists.

Hi Greg,

thanks, this is a possible way. But since this feature is limited to the certain observing list, it is not the overall solution which I am looking for. I would like to see this status in every stage or log.
Looks like one more feature request for ST 4 if possible.
I do have this case quite often since I look for the faintest objects with my scopes and retry it in other nights/with other scopes. So a kind of general flag would help me a lot.

Uli

Hi,

The thing is, the Nightly Planner or Real Time tool, is meant to be how you organize your observations. So as I see it, this is where this feature should be. After all, what good does it do you to have it elsewhere? Ultimately you need to have an observing list of things you wish to observe. This is how SkyTools works...

OK, good point.
Does the flag only work in one single observing list or in any list where I put the object? I often have one object in some lists.
For example, I mark the observation status for Hoags Object in one list as "re-observe". Is this status than also in another list where the objects is listed also set?

sorry, just saw you already answered this question

No, its affects the one list only. The idea is to allow a different status for each list. For example, imagine a husband and wife team observing the same objects. Each could have their own list and own status. Another example would be if you were doing a list at a star party, and the observations had to be made at that party. This way you could keep track of what you observed at the party in a separate list.

I will look into also associating an observation status with the notes, similar to how the ratings work. This would allow for a more global attribute.

Hi again,

OK, I got it and will go on with the current observing status feature. But I would really appreciate it, if you would find a way to add such a status at the log/notes etc.

Thanks for your help and cs,
Uli

Greg,

Have you ever gotten around making the observing status more global so that is can be searched for? The way I make my observing lists in almost all cases is to search for objects in a certain constellation that I have not observed yet. It would be a tremendous help to also be able to search for objects marked for reobserving because I may have logged them with a smaller telescope and want to see them with a larger one, or perhaps because I observed them under poor observing conditions and want to reobserve them under better ones. Tonight for instance I am observing with my 12" from my backyard because I am locked up and there is no room for my 20" telescope. Some of the objects I will want to observe again later and having a very quick way to find them would be a big help.

Many thanks in advance for adding this to your (undoubtedly long) todo list for ST4V.

Hi,

I have not yet found a simple means of doing this. The thing is, many people don't want this to be a global feature. So I can't just break it completely. That requires a compromise, and I have yet to come up with one.

Here is my backhanded way of accomplishing this for ST3:
  • I have separate Note/Rating Groups set up for each of my three telescopes.
  • Everything I observe gets a rating in the appropriate Note/Rating Group.  Ratings apply "globally" within a Note/Rating Group.
  • If an object has no rating, it means I haven't seen it in that telescope, at all.
For some reason, when I imported my ST3 data into ST4, the Note/Rating Groups appear to have gone missing.  But, I've been working so much during shelter-at-home, that I've barely had time to play with ST4 since I bought it two months ago, and this is one of the things I still need to dig into.

Here is what I would like to see:
  • Separate columns for [A] Observation Status This List, [B] Observation Status this Note/Rating Group, and [C] Observation Status Global (i.e., the master object database).  [A] feeds [B], which in turns feeds [C].  Columns [B] and [C] would contain numbers (instead of symbols) for the number of times each object has been observed for that Note/Rating Group and Globally.  This way, we could sort on most observed objects and get some simple statistics for what we have seen.
  • Similar separate columns and hierarchy for Log Entry Status and for Object Rating.  For Log Entry Status, Columns [B] and [C] would be similar to Observation Status.  On the other hand, for Object Ratings, the ratings given for multiple lists [A] under the same Note/Rating Group would be averaged for Column [B] and all Object Ratings from all lists would be averaged again in Column [C].  The reason for this approach is that my object ratings actually vary night-to-night and telescope-to-telescope, but within ST3 I can have only one rating for that Note/Rating Group.
