NGC 7023 Iris Nebula - Slugger - 2024-12-12 Iris Nebula is missing catalog number NGC 7023. .skylist file SkyObject=BeginObject ObjectID=4,-1,-1 CatalogNumber=Iris Nebula CatalogNumber=vdB 139 CatalogNumber=H IV-74 CatalogNumber=Bernes 39 Importing .skylist file to SkySafari 7 pro does not recognize vdB 139, H IV-74 or Bernes 39. SkySafari does find NGC 7023. I changed CatalogNumber to NGC 7023. Imported a new list to SkySafari and it worked. SkyObject=BeginObject ObjectID=4,-1,-1 CatalogNumber=Iris Nebula CatalogNumber=NGC 7023 CatalogNumber=H IV-74 CatalogNumber=Bernes 39 RE: NGC 7023 Iris Nebula - theskyhound - 2024-12-12 Hello, I can confirm that the Iris nebula is indeed NGC 7023 (you would be surprised how often incorrect designations get propagated,e specially in handbooks and articles). I have made a note to fix this when I next work on the databases. Your solution is smart! RE: NGC 7023 Iris Nebula - patternmoorhen - 2024-12-27 How long does it take to fix that error, admin? RE: NGC 7023 Iris Nebula - doessordid - 2025-03-31 (2024-12-12, 05:15 PM)Slugger Wrote: Iris Nebula is missing catalog number NGC 7023.It looks like SkySafari 7 Pro primarily recognizes NGC 7023 for the Iris Nebula but does not identify alternative catalog names like vdB 139, H IV-74, or Bernes 39. Your solution of explicitly adding NGC 7023 under CatalogNumber seems to have resolved the issue. To ensure compatibility, always include NGC 7023 in .skylist files when referencing the Iris Nebula, while still keeping alternative catalog names for reference. Yeah, SkySafari tends to rely primarily on the NGC/IC catalog numbers for object recognition. Even though vdB 139, H IV-74, and Bernes 39 are valid alternate catalog names, they often aren’t indexed the same way in the app. Replacing one of the CatalogNumber entries with NGC 7023 is definitely the right move—once it's in there, SkySafari picks it up without issue. I’ve run into similar quirks before with objects that have multiple designations. |
